Large images slow down uploads and pages. The compressor re-encodes your image as a JPG at the quality you choose, in your browser, and shows the new file size and how much smaller it is before you download.
Compression is a trade-off. High quality settings keep the image close to the original; low settings make much smaller files and, below the halfway mark, also reduce the resolution. Images larger than 3840 pixels on the long side are scaled down to 3840.
Compress last, after any resizing, and look at the result at full size. Because the output is JPG, transparent areas are filled in, so keep cut-outs from the background remover as PNG.
